Why the camel?

In our logo, a camel stands untied beside a hitching post, looking curiously at you—her owner. The image is inspired by a hadith recorded in Jamiʿ al-Tirmidhi, commonly paraphrased in English as “Trust in God, but tie your camel.” The hadith itself joins rather than opposes trust and practical action: “Tie her and place your trust [in God].” That difference matters.

OS-ERIN begins from the assumption that the health of the scientific record depends in part on reciprocal trust: we must be able to trust our peers’ work and, in turn, trust that our own work will be read carefully by them. Right now, tying our proverbial camel is both time-consuming and unrewarded. OS-ERIN was created to make that task easier and to share the benefits of responsible practice.
